Make Your Memoir
Read Like A Novel

Sept 13, 2018
Zoe will be teaching an 8-week course, beginning Sept. 13, 2017 at Left Margin Lit in Berkeley, CA.

Tailored for students with some writing experience, this workshop will take the components of literary fiction — plot, scene, setting, dialogue, character, etc. — and apply them to memoir and personal essay. Classes will give you a chance to think deeply about your work and develop your writing technique. Each student will have a chance to submit two short pieces of writing for critique by the class.

Song Stories: Turning Life into Lyrics

September, 2019

Zoe will be teaching a 6-week course, beginning Sept. 17, 2019 at Left Margin Lit in Berkeley, CA.

This six-week class is for both beginning and seasoned musicians interested in generating and finessing original “song stories” in a collaborative, supportive environment. The class will be largely generative — we’ll use prompts and exercises to get the words and ideas flowing.

You will have a chance to bring in a song based on material you’ve generated for gentle feedback and critique. (You can either record your song at home or perform it live for the class, depending on their instrumentation.) For those who do not sing or play an instrument, lyrics can be considered solely on the page.

Finally, you will be paired in a fun, collaborative exercise that should result in a second completed song. This class will also cover basic copywriting issues, explore the pros and cons of co-writing, and study some of the songwriting masters, from Bob Dylan to Jason Isbell.
